The 100s section of the Dewey Decimal Classification system includes books about feelings, manners, friendship, ESP, how the mind works, dealing with loss, and books containing ghost stories. A high school collection will contain books that deal with these subjects on a more mature level, as well as topics that are not addressed at all in elementary and middle schools, such as euthanasia. In spite of these differences, the process of weeding is much the same. When tackling the task of weeding this section of the high school library, it is helpful to keep in mind the following guidelines and recommendations. Begin with the 150s through the 170s, as these subjects are most urgently in need of keeping current due to the popularity and changing nature of the content. As a general rule, remove materials that have an out of date copyright, ten years or older. Replace books that are unattractive to potential readers due to poor condition, unsuitable or incorrect subject matter, or inappropriate reading level. Another consideration when weeding is the circulation record. If books have not been checked out in the past three years they should be removed from the collection. When weeding the 100s, 130s, and 180s, ghost stories, psychology, philosophy, and philosophers, use condition and value as the determining factors, as these books are relevant for much longer periods of time. The acronyms, *CREW and *MUSTIE, are also helpful tools in deciding what, when, and how to weed.
